Brown University Director of Advancement Events in Providence, Rhode Island

Job Description:

The Brown University Division of Advancement seeks qualified applicants for the position of Director of Advancement Events.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Donor Relations and Engagement, the Director of Advancement Events (Director) is responsible for developing a comprehensive division-wide strategy for all events that provides high quality engagement, cultivation, and stewardship opportunities for alumni, parents, donors and volunteers. In coordination with event staff throughout Advancement, the Director will implement consistent standards and protocols to create a strategy for all annual, campaign related and other special events that will ensure optimal return on investment. The Director will oversee the planning and execution of all events, maintain oversight of budgets, and perform analysis of events to determine their effectiveness to assist with and improve future event planning.

Areas of responsibility include: Campaign events, Commencement/Reunion events, special regional events, athletic events, Development/AR events for students/others in the Brown community, and others. The Director will directly supervise an events team of five and will work closely with event staff in Alumni Relations, Regional Development, Brown University Sports Foundations, and Annual Fund.


  • Bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years experience with the planning and execution of complex multi-layered events, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in a higher-education setting highly preferred; knowledge of Brown also highly preferred.

  • Excellent organizational, communications, time-management, interpersonal, and multitasking skills.

  • Experience in oversight of Advancement fundraising events and supervisory experience required.

  • Ability to work in a team setting required.

  • Ability to interact with a wide diversity of constituents, from Brown students to persons of high social status.

  • Judgement, tact, discretion, and the ability to work with highly confidential information required.

  • Must be able to manage multiple projects effectively to meet aggressive timelines and challenging deadlines.

  • Excellent knowledge of e-mail, calendaring software (Google preferred), as well as the Microsoft Office suite of applications. Must be able to manipulate databases and understand social media/social marketing.

  • Must be willing and able to work occasional evenings and weekends.

  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the US to attend relevant programs/events.
